| A Note From the Man... | ||||||||||||||||||||||
"What
can I say about head and intake porting? You are always learning. When
you think you know it all you make yourself an idiot. One thing I know
is I love it.
Loving head and intake work is what separates me from others; it is fun for me. This is to change the way people think about OEM Ford and other cast iron heads. What my goal is to have people say, 'I can't believe that made that power with the original heads!'" |

...I
have spent serious time and a lot of late nights porting, flowing, ruining
ports by going to the limit, cutting apart ports, and learning...always.
I can port most Ford heads to send the high dollar aluminum head whimpering
back to the shelf. Let's face it, the aluminum after market heads will
never be beat with the same porting as a cast iron, but the cast iron
is a ton cheaper, and can beat a mildly ported aluminum head. In the
case of a 460, an equally performing cast iron head costs half as much
as an equally performing aluminum head." |

Now
I have learned that valve size is important. I have learned that bigger
is not better. A little bigger may be okay, but stock sizes are hard
to beat. You will see most of my heads run stock valves and maintain
good flow numbers. A stock port with 2.08 valves cannot efficiently
run a 2.25 valve. For starters, there isn't enough substance there to
open the throat effectively. Next thing is that the efficiency drops
with a bigger valve. If you take a port flowing 300 with 2.08 valves
it will crush the efficiency of a 300 C.F.M. port with a 2.25 valve.
I learned this from a top head man that works pro-stock. Also the air
loses it's velocity when it spreads to far at the intake valve and just
falls in the port instead of shooting in there. An efficient set of
heads with small valves flowing equal to big valved heads will make
up to 10 % more power. Amazing! Efficiency and velocity are two majorly
overlooked issues." |

Another
huge power loss is reverse flow. This is something Nascar has worked
on in recent years. I have also. This is where the intake charge is
sucked up to intake again, and where the exhaust is sucked out of the
header back into the cylinder and sometimes all the way to the intake.
It is very important to keep the exhaust going out, and intake charge
coming into the cylinder. I have tested this until my eyes were almost
popping out of my head and have found with valve angles, leaving some
areas rough, not porting at all some area, and some specific notching
that this can significantly be reduced. This is another way Barnett
High Performance heads are different than they appear at a glance. Another
way that my heads dog aluminum heads that are box stock." |

Don't get me wrong, the aluminum heads for all out race (money is no object) can't be beat. For street use and low and mid range power our ported irons are enough to put a smile on anyones face. For over 6500rpms and all out racing an aluminum head is the way to go but again not in box stock form. They have to be be worked on to out horse the tricked out irons. For low budget engines ported OEM cast are your most bang for the buck." ~ Tim Barnett |
